Third-row space that fits adults: Suburban, Yukon XL, Expedition Max, Sequoia and more
Comparing third-row space in full-size SUVs: Suburban, Yukon XL, Expedition Max, Toyota Sequoia, Traverse, Acadia and minivans. Legroom, cargo, towing.
Many three-row SUVs share a simple flaw: the third row often feels like an afterthought. Adults sit cramped, knees up, and a long trip turns into endurance rather than travel. That’s why it pays to look past promises and focus on hard numbers for space and usability.
Among full-size models, the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL are frequently held up as examples of a truly usable third row. They offer about 93.2 cm of legroom for rear passengers, which means it’s no longer a token kids’ perch but a place where you can ride without constantly asking to pull over and stretch.
There’s also a family-friendly bonus: cargo room with the third row in use. You get roughly 1,175 liters behind the last seats, so you don’t have to choose between taking all the people or all the stuff. And if towing is on the agenda, the Suburban is rated at around 3,765 kg, while the Yukon XL comes in at about 3,810 kg.
One of the closest rivals is the Ford Expedition Max. The stretched version matches that third-row legroom with about 94 cm and delivers one of the largest trunks in the segment. On the road it feels like one of the few SUVs that can genuinely challenge the Suburban for long-distance comfort.
The latest Toyota Sequoia falls short of the American trio on cabin length, yet still offers around 86–88 cm of rear legroom. For adults, that’s acceptable—especially for medium-distance trips. At the same time, the Sequoia plays to its strengths with a hybrid powertrain and strong towing capability.
Among the more everyday-friendly options, the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia stand out. They’re smaller on paper, but their third rows are noticeably more accommodating than in most crossovers. It’s a sensible compromise for those who don’t need a massive body-on-frame SUV yet often carry people in the back.
And don’t overlook minivans like the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna. When it comes to third-row space, they often outdo similarly priced SUVs, thanks to a low floor, easy access, and comfort that stays predictable for adult passengers.
