2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 get a redesigned rear-bumper step

General Motors updates the 2027 Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 with a trapezoid rear-bumper step—sharper looks, subtle footing guidance, same depth.

While developing the next-generation 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, General Motors focused not only on bodywork, cabin design, and powertrains, but also on one of a full-size pickup’s most overlooked features—the central step in the rear bumper.

On current models, including the 2025 Silverado and Sierra, that step is a rectangular cutout with straight edges and a flat lower lip. It looks utilitarian and hardly draws attention, yet it reliably provides a straightforward foothold for accessing the bed.

Prototypes of the 2027 Silverado and Sierra show a clear change in shape. The classic rectangle gives way to a more intricate trapezoid that tapers toward the bottom, with beveled side cutouts. Visually, it lends the rear bumper a tougher attitude and meshes better with the next generation’s angular, “technical” styling.

Preliminary information suggests the step’s depth remains the same, so a major jump in functionality isn’t expected. Even so, the beveled edges could help guide a foot toward the center, potentially reducing the chance of slipping when climbing into the bed. It may well be that the priority here is less about ergonomics and more about a fresher rear-end appearance.

For GM, the logic tracks: even utilitarian elements are now expected to support a more expressive design, as modern pickups are purchased not only as work tools but also as family or image vehicles.

In that context, the updated rear-bumper step becomes part of the broader design language for the 2027 Silverado and Sierra. Small touches like this underline how closely GM is sweating the details on its next wave of pickups. It might be a cosmetic tweak, but changes of this kind often add up to a truck that genuinely feels new day to day.
