Survey: CarPlay and Android Auto drive new-car choices

A new survey shows Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make-or-break for car buyers, amid distrust of native infotainment and churn risk if platforms are removed.

Not long ago, CarPlay and Android Auto were seen as pleasant add‑ons, but a fresh survey suggests they’re now make‑or‑break features for many new‑car shoppers. According to the poll, 55% of Apple CarPlay users say losing support would be a non‑starter that could stop a purchase outright. Among Android Auto users, the figure is lower yet still substantial at 36%.

Respondents indicated the issue isn’t so much about loyalty to a phone as it is distrust of factory software. Asked whether automakers can build something on par with Apple or Google, 31% said no and another 36% were unsure. That’s effectively a majority skeptical of built‑in infotainment, and it speaks volumes: seamless phone integration has become the benchmark by which in‑car tech is judged.

Behavioral answers underscore the stakes. While 49% are willing to give a native system a chance, 20% say they would simply sell the car and move to another brand if CarPlay or Android Auto were switched off. Looking at the groups more closely, 28% of CarPlay users are ready to change marques, compared with 19% among Android Auto users. For any brand, removing these platforms risks instant customer churn.
