Peugeot road-tests the Hypersquare square wheel with steer-by-wire on the E-2008

Peugeot begins real-world trials of its square Hypersquare wheel and steer-by-wire on the E-2008, aiming for 2026 production. Early tests praise ergonomics.

Peugeot has begun real-world trials of its square Hypersquare steering wheel ahead of series production. A prototype fitted with the unusual setup is already being tested on the E-2008 electric crossover, developed in tandem with a steer-by-wire system that removes the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels.

First shown in 2023 on the Inception concept, the square wheel has now moved from concept to road testing, with journalists already allowed behind the wheel of the prototype. The rim features four large openings, with the upper sections housing key controls and serving as thumb braces. Early drives reported a more natural grip than anticipated—a layout that clearly targets better ergonomics without overwhelming the driver.

The steer-by-wire system adjusts its steering ratio with speed. At low speeds it sits around 5:1, which makes responses extremely sharp. German media observed that the wheel can feel jittery during parking maneuvers, while at higher speeds the car settles down and the steering becomes more reassuring and predictable. For the next-generation Peugeot 208, the brand is preparing multiple modes, including a gentler everyday setting and a sportier option. The feedback suggests the low-speed calibration will need fine-tuning, but the multi-mode approach looks like the right tool for the job.

To keep a sense of connection, the system also feeds tactile cues back through vibrations, preserving road feel even without a physical linkage. The technology is expected to reach new production models in 2026.
