GM renews the Buick Electra trademark amid evolving EV plans

General Motors extends the Buick Electra trademark in the U.S., keeping the name active as EV plans evolve. We review active filings and China's Electra range.

General Motors has filed a fresh extension for the Buick Electra trademark in the United States. The application was recorded by the USPTO on December 9, 2025 under number 99538079 and covers automobiles. The renewal suggests GM wants to keep the Electra name in play, even though the filing by itself does not confirm a new model. The move reads as keeping options open rather than a direct product teaser.

In China, Electra has already grown into a standalone NEV lineup and a cornerstone of Buick’s strategy. Recent debuts include the 2026 Electra Encasa with 620 hp and the Electra L7 sedan. Over the summer, the brand also presented the Electra Orbit concept, signaling where its design language is heading next. The Electra E5 received a 2026 update, while the Electra E4 crossover was dropped to streamline the range.

In the U.S., several related trademarks remain active—Electra E5, E6, and E7. Earlier registrations—Electra E1–E4, as well as E8, E9, and Electra GS—have lapsed. As GM adjusts its electrification plans in response to regulatory changes and the cancellation of the federal tax credit, the company is weighing different paths for its EV lineup. Against that backdrop, protecting the Electra name looks timely rather than speculative.
