BYD Denza B5 plug-in hybrid SUV for Australia: price, specs and features

BYD’s Denza B5 PHEV SUV enters Australia with 400 kW AWD, 31.8 kWh battery, 90 km EV range and 3,000 kg towing. See prices, trims, features and delivery timing.

BYD’s Denza sub-brand is entering Australia with the Denza B5, a five-seat SUV pitched against the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest. It’s built on a ladder frame related to the BYD Shark 6 pickup platform, but pairs that hardware with a stronger plug-in hybrid setup and a more upscale specification.

The range comprises two trims: the B5 at AUD 74,990 and the B5 Leopard at AUD 79,990 (both before on-road costs). In size, the B5 sits close to the Prado: length 5,049 mm, width 1,997 mm, height 1,710 mm, with a 3,060 mm wheelbase. A four-seat layout is confirmed for one configuration, although the default arrangement is five seats.

The PHEV powertrain combines a 1.5‑litre turbo petrol engine (135 kW/260 Nm) with two electric motors—200 kW/360 Nm at the front and 285 kW/400 Nm at the rear—for a quoted system output of 400 kW and 760 Nm. A 31.8 kWh LFP battery enables up to 90 km of electric driving on the WLTC cycle; the claimed hybrid range is up to 850 km WLTC. The 0–100 km/h sprint is listed at 4.8 seconds, an eye-catching figure for a body-on-frame SUV and one that hints at serious shove in real-world overtakes.

The B5 is rated to tow 3,000 kg and features locking differentials front and rear. The trade-offs are a hefty curb mass and a modest payload: 600 kg for the base model and 490 kg for the Leopard. For buyers eyeing extensive touring kit, those figures will be worth a close look.

Equipment is generous from the outset: a 15.6‑inch central display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3‑inch digital cluster, 16 speakers, a head‑up display, a 360‑degree camera suite, and seats with heating, ventilation, and massage, plus a broad set of driver assists. The Leopard adds 20‑inch wheels, an adaptive hydraulic suspension with up to 310 mm of ground clearance, and Nappa trim. Preorders are open now, with first deliveries slated for late January 2026. The spec sheet reads convincingly premium, and if Denza matches these promises on-road and off it could unsettle a few established names.
