Tesla's European FSD ride-alongs: hands-ready, regulation-first
Tesla is showcasing its European FSD with supervised ride-alongs across France and Germany, emphasizing a hands-ready, compliant approach tuned to EU rules.
Tesla is turning up the pressure on European regulators with public Full Self-Driving demonstrations, rolling out ride-along sessions in France, Italy, and Germany. Demand has been strong enough that the company has extended the program through March 31, 2026. Every car runs with a supervising driver on board, since current EU rules don’t allow the system to operate otherwise.
The “European” build of FSD differs noticeably from the North American one. Instead of aiming for a fully “hands-off” experience, the on-screen message stresses “hands-ready,” and the driving logic is tuned to local requirements: rather than offering a set of speed profiles, the driver sets a maximum speed, and the system adds prompts about upcoming maneuvers. This more conservative package is designed to fit today’s regulations, many of which were written with older, rule-based driver assists in mind.
It’s a pragmatic pivot: less showy autonomy, more compliance. The extra guidance can make the system feel clearer and, to some, more trustworthy, even if it curbs the sense of freedom. Extending the ride-alongs underscores a strategy of visibility while the company works within Europe’s rulebook.
