Spain centralizes EV subsidies with Auto Plus under Plan España Auto 2030
Spain’s Plan España Auto 2030 unveils Auto Plus: €400m in 2026 EV subsidies, centrally managed for faster dealer discounts and a possible scrappage bonus.
Spain has set a new course for supporting electric vehicles: under the Plan España Auto 2030, the government is launching the Auto Plus program with a €400 million budget for direct subsidies in 2026. The key change is centralized control of the funds: the money will be allocated directly by the executive branch, bypassing the autonomous communities. The idea is to cut bureaucracy, deliver discounts to buyers faster, and give the market clearer rules.
Pedro Sánchez presents the initiative as a roadmap for transforming the automotive sector. The message is straightforward: electric cars in Spain should become more affordable, and the industry needs to learn not only to build EVs but also to compete for customers. Against the backdrop of strengthening Chinese manufacturers, the authorities are trying to support demand while pushing local production, so the country does not become merely a sales outlet.
At the same time, the central problem is acknowledged: for many families, an electric car remains too expensive. The focus therefore shifts to lowering the upfront price, which is psychologically more important than refunds that arrive months later. Bottlenecks are also in the spotlight: a shortage of charging infrastructure and slow procedures that hold back development.
The industry is pressing for specifics. Anfac points out that without measurable targets, clear accountability, and a transparent budget, the plan risks remaining a glossy presentation. The details of Auto Plus are not yet fully disclosed, but a format handled directly at dealerships is being discussed, with current reference levels of aid maintained and a possible bonus for scrapping an old car.
