Ferrari recalls 257 Purosangue in Japan for rear door handle fault

Ferrari recalls 257 Purosangue in Japan for a rear door handle switch fault that can block opening or trigger opening at low speed; new handles and software.

On December 1, Ferrari Japan filed a recall notice with Japan’s transport ministry for 257 examples of the Ferrari Purosangue—a rare step for an ultra-expensive crossover, but the reason is serious. The issue lies in the exterior handle of the rear door: due to insufficient sealant applied to the handle’s switch during production, water can seep in and, over time, degrade the switch circuit.

There are two possible outcomes. The first is relatively mild yet bothersome: the rear door may not open from the outside. The second, however, has safety implications. In the worst case, if the vehicle is unlocked, the rear door could open when stopped or at speeds below 4 km/h. For a vehicle of this stature, that’s especially out of place—it’s not about cosmetic details but about the basic protection of passengers.

Ferrari’s remedy is a blend of hardware and software, much in line with current 2025 practices. All affected cars will get revised exterior rear-door handles, and at the same time the instrument cluster and door locks will receive updated software. The company reports 16 recorded cases and no accidents, and notes that information about the defect came from the manufacturer’s headquarters. The dual approach feels like the right call for a brand that trades as much on assurance as it does on performance.
