Rivian R2: The Cheaper SUV Is Beating the R1 to New Software

The $57,990 Rivian R2 is outpacing the pricier R1T on software updates, with a new build spotted August 4 while R1 owners wait on 2026.23.

The Rivian R1T starts at $79,990 in Dual Motor Large Pack trim — $22,000 more than the entry-level R2 Performance at $57,990. Yet it’s the more affordable crossover pulling ahead on updates: the last public R1 firmware landed June 5, while the R2 got builds on June 9 and July 15. A new R2 version was spotted August 4, while flagship owners are still waiting on the 2026.23 release.

The new R1 firmware is expected to extend Lane Change on Command beyond freeways, add traffic lights and cones to the Autonomy view, improve charging-station search, and let Rivian Assistant draft service requests. The assistant will also be able to remember past conversations, though memory is off by default.

There’s a notable catch: the expanded lane-change feature and new visualization are limited to second-generation R1 models. Gen 1 owners will get assistant improvements and bug fixes — hardware differences continue to split one lineup’s feature set. Full cloud capabilities for Rivian Assistant require a Connect+ subscription or an active trial.

Meanwhile, version 2026.24.41 for the R2 improves audio, climate control, digital key, charging, and Gear Guard. Both firmwares are still listed as Public Release TBD, so wide rollout isn’t imminent yet. Previously, 32CARS.RU covered the R2’s first major update with its Launch and Pet Comfort modes. For now, software priority sits with the newer model — and the R1’s price tag no longer guarantees first place in the update queue.
