Aptera Moves From Prototypes to Production, but Only 40 Cars for Now

Aptera has ordered bodies and chassis for its first 40 production vehicles, a tiny fraction of its roughly 50,000 reservations, as funding for full-scale output remains unresolved.

The number 40 looks like the start of a production story for Aptera, until you compare it with almost 50,000 reservations. The startup has ordered bodies, frames and suspension components for its first production batch, though only some of these vehicles are meant to reach customers. Even in the best case, 40 units would cover just 0.08% of the waiting list.

Suppliers are expected to begin shipping components in October 2026. Aptera already has solar cells on hand for more than 100 vehicles, but the rest of the parts still need to be sourced. The company also hasn’t named a firm date for the start of production and continues working through the necessary testing and regulatory procedures.

The progress isn’t purely for show. This spring Aptera built five validation vehicles, and in July it received EPA certification for the Launch Edition. That certificate confirms compliance with US environmental requirements, though, not full readiness for commercial deliveries.

The main constraint remains financial. As of March 31, 2026, Aptera had $17.7 million in cash, while the company itself estimated it needs $45–50 million for the initial low-volume phase. In July the startup raised $5.7 million through warrant exercises, but its August update still described funding for the production ramp-up as ongoing.

Aptera has previously demonstrated real-world testing of its solar charging system. The order for production bodies brings the project closer to the road, but for reservation holders the real milestone won’t be the October parts delivery — it will be a finished car with a VIN and a confirmed handover date.
