Ford Recalls 47,587 F-150 and F-250 Trucks: Camera Menu Won't Close in Reverse
Ford is recalling US F-150 and F-250 Super Duty trucks after a camera menu overlay can block part of the rearview image. A free APIM software update fixes it.
Ford is recalling 47,587 F-150 and F-250 Super Duty pickups in the US over an unusual rearview camera glitch. The camera itself keeps working, but the view-selection menu can stay on screen after the driver shifts into reverse, blocking part of the image. The driver gets no warning that anything is wrong.
NHTSA campaign 26V489 covers 24,408 Ford F-150 trucks from 2021–2023 and 23,179 Ford F-250 Super Duty trucks from 2023–2026. Affected vehicles have an 8-inch landscape SYNC 4 screen, a 360-degree camera system, and Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) software older than version 2.4.12.
The glitch follows a specific sequence. A driver manually turns on one of the cameras, opens the view-selection menu, makes no selection, then shifts into Reverse. The menu doesn't auto-dismiss and stays on screen until the driver picks a view or closes it — or until the truck is shifted into Drive and speed passes 5 mph. Tested against FMVSS 111, the persistent menu partially covers objects that are required to be visible in the rearview image.
Ford estimates 100% of vehicles in the affected configuration carry the software issue. That doesn't mean the image is blocked every time reverse is engaged — reproducing the fault requires the exact sequence above. As of the filing, Ford had received no warranty claims, owner complaints, or reports of crashes or injuries tied to the issue.
Until the update is installed, Ford is advising owners not to drive the truck and to park it outside rather than in a garage. If a vehicle is driven anyway, the advice is to close the camera menu or pick a view before moving, and if the overlay does block the image mid-maneuver, to stop, clear the menu, and re-check the area with mirrors.
The fix is an APIM software update to version 2.4.12 or later. Ford plans to roll it out over the air starting in August 2026, and owners can also get it installed for free at a Ford or Lincoln dealer. The updated software should automatically dismiss the camera menu once reverse is engaged.
VIN lookup in the NHTSA database has been available since July 31, 2026. Interim owner letters are expected between August 17 and 21, with remedy notification letters going out from September 21 through October 23. Ford's internal number for the campaign is 26C37.
The documents cover the US campaign. Owners of F-150 and F-250 trucks imported into Russia can still check their VIN in the NHTSA database, but the source doesn't confirm free service at Russian dealers or access to the US OTA update outside the United States. Until the fix lands, it's best not to keep reversing if the menu is blocking part of the camera image.
