Renault 4 Savane 4x4: All-Wheel Drive Could Join the Lineup in 2027

Renault's electric 4 crossover may gain a rear motor and permanent all-wheel drive by 2027, according to Auto Moto. Renault has not confirmed the timeline.

An all-wheel-drive Renault 4 already exists as working hardware, but you can't buy one yet. According to Auto Moto, the production Savane 4x4 version could arrive in 2027 and take the top spot in the electric crossover's lineup. Renault has not officially confirmed that timeline.

The Savane concept gained a second electric motor on the rear axle, permanent all-wheel drive, and 15 mm more ground clearance. Front and rear track has been widened by 20 mm, and the concept rides on 225/55 R18 tyres. In 2026, the same technical base was used for the open-top JP4x4 prototype, confirming that the AmpR Small platform is genuinely built for a dual-motor setup.

The standard Renault 4 remains front-wheel drive. The top production version comes with a 150 hp electric motor and a 52 kWh battery good for up to 409 km on the WLTP cycle. A rear motor would improve traction on snow and dirt, but it would also add weight and increase energy consumption. Renault hasn't said how that would affect range.

A direct rival is already on sale: Suzuki offers the electric e Vitara with dual-motor all-wheel drive. 32CARS.RU previously covered what practical capabilities the Suzuki e Vitara gained.

Savane could turn the city-friendly Renault 4 into a more versatile crossover. But the final call will depend on price and range: for now, only the all-wheel-drive capability is confirmed, not a production launch.
