Volkswagen T-Roc 4MOTION: all-wheel drive adds power, but at a price
The new 204-hp Volkswagen T-Roc 2.0 eTSI 4MOTION starts at €49,515 in Germany — about €6,620 more than the front-wheel-drive R-Line.
Volkswagen has priced the T-Roc 2.0 eTSI 4MOTION in Germany at €49,515. All-wheel drive pushes the price up by nearly €6,600 compared with the same R-Line trim. The front-wheel-drive R-Line with the 150-hp 1.5 eTSI engine starts at €42,895. The gap comes to €6,620.
For that premium, buyers get a new two-liter turbo engine rated at 204 hp and 320 Nm, a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The crossover sprints to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and tops out at 226 km/h. Volkswagen quotes WLTP consumption of 7.2–7.5 l/100 km.
The eTSI badge is worth explaining. It’s a 48-volt mild hybrid, not a system that can drive the wheels on electric power alone. A starter-generator assists the petrol engine off the line, handles regenerative braking and lets the engine shut off temporarily while coasting. There’s no plug-in charging and no real electric-only mode.
So the new version is less about saving fuel and more about combining power with all-wheel drive. The front-wheel-drive 150-hp R-Line uses roughly 5.6–5.9 l/100 km, meaning the all-wheel-drive version can burn nearly two liters more. In return, buyers get quicker acceleration and the ability to tow up to 1,800 kg on a 12% gradient.
For now, the 204-hp engine is only available with the pricier R-Line equipment, which includes sport seats, a heated steering wheel, 18-inch wheels, unique body trim and a sport suspension. Buyers can’t get all-wheel drive on the more affordable Life or Style trims.
The more powerful T-Roc R 4MOTION is due by the end of 2026 and will get a tuned version of the same 2.0 eTSI engine. Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed its output yet, so the 333 hp figure circulating in the press remains a forecast, not an official spec.
Version 4MOTION earns its premium for regular winter driving, towing or a need for sharper acceleration. Buyers who care more about fuel economy and city driving will save nearly €6,600 by sticking with the front-wheel-drive T-Roc 1.5 eTSI, which also uses noticeably less fuel.
