Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo: 590 hp from €199,900, and the Folgore is cheaper still

In Italy the updated Trofeo starts at €199,900 — €36,000 more than the 490 hp version, for four tenths of a second. The electric Folgore is quicker on paper and €38,700 cheaper.

The updated Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo has moved to within a whisker of €200,000. In Italy the coupe starts at €199,900 — €36,000 more than the 490 hp version. In return, the 0-100 km/h sprint drops from 3.9 to 3.5 seconds: four tenths of a second come at a steep price, and on ordinary roads the gap between the two versions is barely noticeable. The 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 in the Trofeo now makes 590 hp and 650 Nm — 40 hp more than before.

Standard equipment includes all-wheel drive, an eight-speed ZF automatic, an electronically controlled rear differential, a sports exhaust and a separate Corsa mode with launch control. Top speed is 320 km/h. The facelift brought a new front bumper with a splitter, clear lenses for the rear lights and wheels that widen the track by 10 mm.

The cabin gains a more comfortable steering wheel with flattened top and bottom sections, a metal transmission selector and redesigned instrument graphics. The central 12.3-inch and 8.8-inch screens carry over. On the road the Trofeo has not turned into a stiff track weapon.

The air suspension smooths out bumps with confidence, while the gearbox stays relaxed in GT mode and shifts noticeably harder in Sport and Corsa. Among the drawbacks, the tester singled out the confusing infotainment system and the lack of a mode that would allow the engine, suspension, steering and gearbox to be set up separately.

The most unexpected part of the price list is the electric GranTurismo Folgore. It starts at €161,200, makes 760 hp and reaches 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, which on paper makes it quicker than the Trofeo and €38,700 cheaper. The petrol car justifies the premium not with numbers but with the sound of the Nettuno, less weight and the familiar freedom of long trips with no charging stops.
