Why the BMW i4 is rated the most reliable EV by Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports names the BMW i4 the most reliable EV, scoring 82/100. We explain its 4 Series roots, durability, and note limited recalls for infotainment.
Reliability matters when buying any car, but it takes on particular weight with an electric vehicle. Shoppers focus on durability, build quality, and consistent performance, especially given the limited long-term ownership experience many have with EVs.
Among the key yardsticks are reports from specialized outlets, with Consumer Reports viewed as a leading authority. According to the magazine’s testing, the BMW i4 stands out as the most dependable model in the electric segment, earning a strong score of 82 out of 100.
The i4’s robust showing is attributed to its engineering lineage from BMW’s well-proven 4 Series with an internal-combustion setup. In practice, the company carried over successful solutions from its conventional models and adapted them to the demands of electric propulsion, which gives the i4 the reassuring polish of a refined platform rather than a clean-sheet experiment.
That said, the BMW i4 has faced select recall campaigns linked to isolated issues with motor performance—such as a loss of power—and glitches affecting multimedia components, including the touchscreen and the air-conditioning system. These problems were limited in scope.
