Google Maps Speedometer Quietly Rolls Out to Android Auto — But Only for a Few

A handful of Android Auto users are seeing a built-in speedometer in Google Maps, complete with speed limit data. Here's how it works and how to check for it.

The first Android Auto users have spotted a built-in speedometer inside Google Maps. The car’s screen now shows the current speed, and when navigation is active, the posted speed limit can appear alongside it. So far the feature has only been seen by a handful of drivers, so it’s too early to call this a full global rollout.

One confirmed case was spotted in Canada on the Google Maps beta version 26.29.02.946673643. A few more reports have come in from India. Based on early observations, having that specific app version doesn’t guarantee the speedometer will show up: activation appears to happen on Google’s server side and depends on region. The company hasn’t published an official announcement yet.

In full-screen mode, the readout sits on top of the map. The multi-window Coolwalk interface is also supported. With a route set, Google Maps shows both the car’s current speed and the limit for that stretch of road. Without navigation running, only the current speed may be displayed. A similar feature landed on CarPlay back in 2024, and Waze has supported it on Android Auto for much longer.

There’s currently no way to force the feature on from the head unit itself. On your phone, it’s worth checking Google Maps: “Settings” — “Navigation settings” — “Driving options” — “Speedometer.” Updating Maps and Android Auto is a good idea, though it won’t by itself unlock the server-side feature.

Google Maps’ readings are calculated from location data and can differ from your dashboard due to GPS signal quality, tunnels, dense urban areas, or delays in fixing your position. Google explicitly states the on-screen speedometer is for informational purposes only. You should rely on your car’s own instrument for actual speed — especially near speed cameras and where the limit changes quickly.
