GMC Sierra 1500: Base TurboMax Engine Gets a 10-Speed Automatic for the First Time

The next-generation GMC Sierra 1500 will get a ten-speed automatic transmission across the entire lineup for the first time, including trucks with the base four-cylinder TurboMax engine. On the current 2026 model, that 2.7-liter turbo engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic.

Today the TurboMax produces 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, but GMC is further upgrading the engine for the 2027 Sierra. GMC promises best-in-class standard torque, though final specifications haven’t been released yet. Fuel economy and maximum towing capacity haven’t been announced either.

Ten gears let the engine stay in its optimal power band more precisely. In theory, that should improve acceleration smoothness, towing performance and highway fuel efficiency, though no confirmed comparative data exists yet. The new transmission also brings the TurboMax in line with the Sierra’s diesel and V8 gas engines, which get the same ten-speed unit.

The pickup is expected to reach U.S. dealers toward the end of 2026. Pricing will be announced later. According to 32CARS.RU, you can read more about the global debut of the GMC Sierra 2027 in a separate story.
