Volvo marks 4 million SPA-built cars and readies SPA2/SPA3

Volvo celebrates 4 million vehicles on its SPA platform, led by the XC90. Explore safety innovations and what's next globally with SPA2, SPA3 and OTA updates.

Volvo has reached a milestone of four million vehicles built on its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Introduced in 2014 with the second-generation XC90, the platform has gone on to shape the brand’s contemporary identity.

Engineered in Sweden, SPA is deployed at Volvo plants in four countries—Sweden, Belgium, the United States, and China. It underpins six models, and the four-millionth car to roll off the line was a flagship XC90 SUV.

SPA’s hallmarks include broad manufacturing flexibility, deeply integrated safety systems, and a distinctly Scandinavian design language. Among the technologies are run-off road protection and automatic braking at intersections. The combination signals a philosophy where safety is built into the car from the outset.

Volvo is now advancing the platform with SPA2 and SPA3, targeting electrification and over-the-air updates. Taken together, the milestone and the roadmap reinforce the brand’s standing among leaders in safety and technology.
