Hyundai IONIQ 3: the plain version reveals a silhouette rivals don’t have

Hyundai has shown the standard IONIQ 3 without the N Line pack. The kammback electric hatch offers up to 496 km WLTP, a 400-volt E-GMP platform and a price expected below €30,000 before subsidies.

Hyundai has revealed the first official images of the IONIQ 3 without the sporty N Line pack. Until now the brand had only shown the more aggressive version, so it is finally clear how the standard electric hatchback for Europe will look.

The standard IONIQ 3 gets a calmer front bumper without the black “mask”, a light-coloured cabin and wheels ranging from 16 to 18 inches. The N Line runs 19-inch rims, so the regular version will likely prove more efficient. The black wheel-arch cladding stays — it lends the car a touch of crossover character.

The design's main highlight is the kammback profile with its sharply cut-off tail. The silhouette recalls the first Hyundai Ioniq from 2016 and the Toyota Prius. For the B-segment it is an unusual move: most rivals stick to a classic hatchback or a small SUV, while the IONIQ 3 looks like a format of its own.

In size it is bigger than the Volkswagen ID. Polo. It measures 4155 mm long, 1800 mm wide and 1505 mm tall, with a 2680 mm wheelbase. The N Line is slightly longer at 4170 mm. Production takes place at Hyundai's İzmit plant in Türkiye.

The IONIQ 3 is built on the E-GMP platform and shares its hardware with the Kia EV2. The base version gets a 147 hp motor and a 42.2 kWh battery for 344 km WLTP. The higher-end variant carries a 61 kWh pack and promises 496 km WLTP, yet its motor is weaker at 135 hp.

That makes for an unusual line-up: the longest-range version is not the most powerful. The sprint to 100 km/h takes 9 or 9.6 seconds depending on the variant, and top speed is capped at 170 km/h. The architecture is 400-volt. The base battery charges from 10 to 80% in 29 minutes, the larger one in 30 minutes.

Despite the compact class, Hyundai is not out to make the IONIQ 3 feel cheap. The kit list includes a digital key, heated and ventilated seats, a premium Bose sound system and Pleos Connect multimedia running on Android Automotive. Screens measure 12.9 and 14.6 inches. The starting price is expected to sit below €30,000 before subsidies.

In the Hyundai range the new IONIQ 3 slots between the Inster and the Kona, but with one key difference: those models grew out of combustion cars, whereas the IONIQ 3 was designed as an EV from the outset. For the buyer that means not a reworked city hatch but a full EV with nearly 500 km of range in a compact body.

Earlier, 32CARS.RU reported that the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N Line had entered production in Thailand.
