Japan’s hybrid edge cracks: Chery, Geely and Changan pass Toyota on thermal efficiency

Chery, Geely and Changan now claim hybrid engine thermal efficiency above 46%, while Toyota — long the hybrid benchmark — sits at 41–44%. Japan’s edge is shrinking.

Chinese automakers are no longer a threat only in the EV segment. According to Nikkei Chinese, Chery, Geely and Changan are quickly catching up with the Japanese in conventional powertrains too — especially in hybrids.

The headline metric is thermal efficiency. Chery has unveiled its Kunpeng Tianqing hybrid system and claims 46.5% thermal efficiency. Geely goes higher: its Leishen AI Hybrid 2.0 is rated at 47.26%. Changan’s Blue Whale 3.0 is quoted at 47.03%. For comparison, Toyota — long considered the hybrid benchmark — sits at roughly 41–44% with its latest powertrains.

The difference isn’t only in percentages. The Chinese are trying to tie the engine, electric motor, battery and gearbox together through software: algorithms shift operating modes based on route, driving style, temperature and state of charge. What used to be a mechanical race for fuel economy is turning into a contest of software control. That is why Chery, Geely and Changan are now competing not against old naturally aspirated engines, but directly against the Toyota Hybrid System.

For buyers, this matters more than yet another large dashboard screen. If Chinese hybrids actually deliver these numbers in real-world use, they can offer low fuel consumption without depending on charging infrastructure. That is especially relevant in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and other markets where a pure EV doesn’t suit everyone and an efficient hybrid is an easier sell.

In emerging markets the appeal can outweigh that of a regular EV: buyers worry about cold-weather battery performance, expensive charging and falling resale value, but they are willing to listen to arguments about fuel consumption, durability and range. The future Chery, Geely and Changan hybrids will therefore compete not only with each other, but with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, the Corolla Cross Hybrid and used Lexus models.

Japan won for years on trust in its engineering. China is now coming for something else — the arguments themselves, in numbers, price and speed of updates.
