Volkswagen is taking the next step in home EV charging. Elli, the energy company within the VW Group, is bringing its Vehicle-to-Grid package for private customers to the German market. The launch is taking place at the Power2Drive trade fair in Munich, where interested customers can already pre-register.

The system consists of three elements: the Elli BiDi Charger wall-mounted DC charging station, the Volkswagen Naturstrom V2G Flow electricity tariff and the Elli BiDi App. The owner plugs the car in at home and sets a target time and minimum state of charge in the app. During the remaining idle time, the battery can be made available to the grid. Under the current plan, customers can earn a bonus of up to 720 euros in the first contract year.

At launch, the technology is aimed at Group models built on the MEB platform. Eligible cars are those running ID. Software 3.5 with a battery of at least 77 kWh, as well as all ID. models running ID. Software 6. According to VW, around one million MEB-based EVs are already on European roads, with roughly 360,000 in Germany technically prepared for bidirectional charging.

The car is gradually turning from an energy consumer into a home energy storage unit that can ease grid load and bring its owner extra value. The key question now is how quickly such solutions will go mainstream and spread beyond Germany.
