Jeep explains its design language: why the grille and arches became brand symbols
Jeep designers reveal the principles behind the brand's look after winning the Car Design Award 2026 for Brand Design Language.
The Jeep design team has explained the principles that shape the look of the brand’s vehicles. The catalyst was the Car Design Award 2026 in the Brand Design Language category, which the brand received for the consistent evolution of its visual identity. To illustrate the approach, Jeep gathered all the key elements of its style into a single sketch.
At the heart of the Jeep approach lies the principle of “design serving function.” The company stresses that recognizable details such as the seven-slot grille and trapezoidal wheel arches are never purely decorative. They reinforce the image of an SUV built for adventure and real-world use. That logic has already shaped the look of the new Avenger and Compass, both developed for the European market.
Among the main elements the designers highlight are off-road proportions, short overhangs, high ground clearance, protective body cladding and wide wheel arches. According to Jeep, these solutions make the car look solid and ready for stress without sacrificing functionality. Particular attention goes to protecting the body, headlights, bumpers and underbody from minor damage.
Another core principle is versatility. According to Jeep, its models should handle daily city driving and off-road trips with equal confidence. That is why the design accommodates several powertrain types at once: full electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and combustion versions. The signature “boxy” body shape is also preserved — it makes more efficient use of cabin space.
