Volvo XC40 T4 and T5 plug-in hybrid recall: owners told to stop charging the car
Volvo is recalling 64,089 XC40 T4 and T5 plug-in hybrids worldwide. Owners are advised not to charge the cars until the high-voltage battery is inspected.
Volvo is recalling the plug-in hybrid versions of the XC40 T4 and T5 over a possible issue with the high-voltage battery. The campaign covers 64,089 vehicles worldwide from the 2020–2022 model years.
The cause of the recall is the battery itself. In affected Volvo XC40 T4 and T5 Plug-in Hybrid units, a defect may appear when the pack is fully charged, allowing individual cells to start overheating. In the worst case, that can lead to the battery catching fire. At the dealer, technicians will inspect the cells for irregularities and replace the battery modules if needed. According to available information, no injuries have been reported.
For owners, the practical takeaway is simple: if a vehicle falls under the recall, it should not be charged until it has been to the service center or Volvo issues an official update. This affects only certain T4 and T5 plug-in hybrid versions from the previous model years, not every XC40.
The most important thing for owners of these cars right now is to wait for an official notice or check the vehicle status with Volvo by VIN. Until that check is done, the manufacturer’s recommendation should not be ignored: this is about battery safety, not convenience.
