Freelander 8: Chery–JLR shows the new SUV, and only the Land Rover name is left

Chery Jaguar Land Rover has revealed the Freelander 8 First Limited Edition. It’s not a direct successor to the old Land Rover, but a new Chinese SUV with electrified hardware, CATL batteries and Huawei tech.
The Freelander name is coming back — just not in the form long-time Land Rover owners remember. Chery Jaguar Land Rover has released official images of the Freelander 8 First Limited Edition, the first model of a standalone brand that goes on sale in China in the second half of 2026.
From the photos, the special edition wears a matte silver finish, a chunky body, a closed-off front end, slim lighting and a clear off-road posture. But this is no longer the compact British crossover of the past. According to Chinese certification documents, the Freelander 8 is a large electrified SUV with a gross weight of up to 3,495 kg, drawing on CATL and Huawei technology. Earlier reports also mentioned advanced Huawei driver assistance and LiDAR.
The real story is the positioning. Freelander is no longer a Land Rover model, but a standalone brand sitting inside the Chery–JLR tie-up. The British side brings the name, design expertise and an instantly recognisable off-road image. The Chinese side brings the platform, batteries, electronics and the speed of getting a product to market. That formula fits today’s China well: buyers don’t just want “premium” — they want a big screen, electrification, driver assistance and rich equipment for sensible money.
For JLR, this is a careful way to play below Range Rover, Defender and Discovery without diluting any of them directly. For Chery, it’s a chance to sell not yet another Chinese SUV, but a car with a historic name, even if in a new role. If the project works, Freelander could grow from a single crossover into a whole line-up of electrified models.
Sometimes a brand comes back somewhere other than where it was expected. The Freelander 8 is exactly that kind of case.
