Sports cars sit in garages: Mustang and Corvette turn out to be the least-driven cars
A new iSeeCars study analyzed odometers of 2.1 million three-year-old cars. The Ford Mustang turned out to be the most garage-bound gasoline model, averaging just 3,367 km a year.
Ford Mustang is bought for the sound, the emotion and the feel behind the wheel, but in real life owners drive it surprisingly little. A fresh iSeeCars study has shown that among gasoline-powered cars, the Mustang turned out to be the most garage-bound option of all.
Analysts studied the odometers of more than 2.1 million three-year-old cars sold in 2025 and calculated the average annual mileage by model and powertrain type. The Ford Mustang ended up with just 3,367 km a year. For comparison, the Chevrolet Corvette covers an average of 7,072 km. In the ranking of the least-used gasoline cars, sports cars took up almost all of the top spots.
After the Mustang comes the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class with a result of 5,111 km a year, followed by the Porsche 911 at around 6,196 km. Even the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is cheaper, lighter and more frugal than many sports cars, averages only 9,568 km a year. The picture is clear. Cars like these are often bought not as a primary means of transport, but as a vehicle for weekends, the warm season or short pleasure drives. On top of that come fuel prices, speeding fines, a shortage of interesting roads and plain everyday impracticality: for a long family trip it’s easier to take a crossover, a minivan or a hybrid.
At the other end of the ranking are very different cars. The hardest-working gasoline model turned out to be the Chrysler Pacifica at 33,590 km a year. The Chrysler Voyager is right behind it at around 33,071 km, while the Chevrolet Suburban covers roughly 31,585 km. The average gasoline car in the study clocks 21,441 km a year.
Hybrids are used even more actively. Conventional hybrid models average 23,650 km a year, with the Toyota Sienna the most-driven of them all at around 27,951 km. Plug-in hybrids average 18,765 km, EVs 19,119 km. Among EVs the Tesla Model 3 leads the way with around 21,852 km a year.
It makes for a funny contrast: cars built for the joy of driving often see the road the least. The Mustang remains a symbol of fun behind the wheel, but for many owners that fun doesn’t kick in every day — only when the time, the weather and the reason all line up.
