Mercedes CLA 200+ EQ: less power, bigger battery and up to 730 km of range

Mercedes adds a new mid-range CLA 200+ EQ with the 85 kWh battery, 218 hp and a WLTP range close to 730 km. The Shooting Brake starts at €49,650 in Spain.

Mercedes has expanded the new electric CLA line-up with the 200+ EQ version. On paper it looks like the most rational choice in the range: less power than the top trims, but a larger battery, long driving range and a price below the psychological ceiling of expensive premium EVs.

So far, only the Spanish price for the CLA Shooting Brake 200+ EQ has been disclosed — €49,650, or about $57,300 at current exchange rates. A specific commercial launch date has not been set, but orders are expected to open in the coming weeks.

The technical package is not chasing acceleration figures. The rear axle is fitted with an electric motor rated at 218 hp and 335 Nm — the same unit as in the CLA 200, slightly detuned for efficiency. The CLA 200+ EQ covers 0–100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and tops out at 210 km/h. That is plenty for everyday driving, and the main bet here is clearly elsewhere.

Instead of the compact 58 kWh pack, Mercedes has fitted the same 85 kWh NMC battery used in the more powerful CLA 250+. As a result, the claimed WLTP range comes close to 730 km. For drivers who spend a lot of time on the motorway, that matters more than shaving off a second in the sprint: fewer stops, less dependence on the charging network and less anxiety on long trips.

Charging speed has also been kept on a par with the top variants. The CLA 200+ EQ supports up to 320 kW DC and recharges the battery from 10 to 80 % in roughly 22 minutes. Inside, the cabin features Mercedes’ new digital architecture, with the option of three screens including a passenger display.

The point of the 200+ EQ is that Mercedes is no longer trying to win on power alone. Against Chinese EVs and Tesla, the German brand has to show not just a premium cabin but a practical case: long range, fast charging and a clear entry price.

The CLA 200+ EQ is not the fastest in the line-up, but this is the version that may end up being the most relevant: electric cars increasingly need to win the journey, not the traffic light.
