Ford Edge Recall: Brakes Under Recall, But the Bill Lands on the Owner

Ford recalled nearly 500,000 Edge and MKX crossovers over leaking rear brake hoses, but a year on there's still no remedy — and one owner already paid for the repair himself.

Ford is dealing with an awkward situation around the recall of nearly half a million crossovers. Back in August, the automaker launched a campaign covering 497,624 Ford Edge models from 2015–2018 and Lincoln MKX models from 2016–2018: the rear brake hoses can rupture and leak fluid. The story was reported by Carscoops.

The problem is that the recall exists, yet there is still no ready remedy. Massachusetts resident Paul Lonergan learned about the campaign back in September, and in April he spotted a leak on his 2017 Ford Edge. The dealer's answer was short: Ford has not yet released an official fix. Lonergan ended up paying for the replacement himself — $1,854.

Under US rules, the manufacturer must reimburse owners who fix a recall-related defect at their own expense. Ford told Lonergan to send his receipts in for “reimbursement consideration,” but did not confirm when, or even whether, he would get his money back. The owner summed it up plainly: “I don't have $1,800 to loan to a billion-dollar corporation.”

Ford had originally planned to have the repair ready by April, but work on the affected vehicles will now not begin before September — more than a year after the recall was announced.

For owners, that's a bad signal. When brakes are involved, a recall without a ready fix looks less like a safety effort and more like a wait that's paid for by the customer.
