Renault Ends Retro Wave: No More Vintage Reboots After Twingo

Renault is closing the door on retro-inspired electric models. After R5, R4 and the upcoming Twingo, the brand is shifting to a new design language.

Renault has no plans to turn its entire museum into an electric line-up. After the R5 E-Tech, the R4 E-Tech and the upcoming Twingo E-Tech, the brand wants to call time on the retro wave and move to a new design language.

The formula has paid off. The Renault 5 brought back the look of a compact 1970s city hatch, the Renault 4 turned into a more practical electric crossover that nods to the 1961 original, and the Twingo will lean on memories of the first 1992 model. All three use nostalgia not as decoration, but as a way to stand out fast in a sea of faceless EVs.

The strategy has its limits, though. Renault Group design boss Laurens van den Acker has already made the point: people have a selective memory of the past, and not every old model triggers the same reaction as the R5, R4 or Twingo. So an electric revival of the Safrane, Avantime or a production R17 isn’t on the cards. The R17 Electric Restomod will remain a design exercise rather than a hint at a new production car.

From here, Renault will have to sell EVs without the nostalgic hook. After Twingo’s launch in early 2026 the company will focus on updating its larger electric models, including the Megane and Scenic family. They’re getting an upgraded AmpR Medium platform with 800-volt architecture, and by 2027 Renault wants to cut the cost of its EVs by 40% thanks to LFP batteries, production scale and fewer parts.

For buyers, that’s a shift in priorities. Retro models sell emotion and instant recognition, but a mainstream EV needs price, range, charging speed and sensible repair costs. Especially in Europe, where Renault has to fight not only Volkswagen and Stellantis but also Chinese brands undercutting on price.

Renault played the nostalgia card well, but now the brand has to prove its future is just as recognisable.
