Tommykaira ZZ Makes Surprise Return as the Number Nine Works Sweep 9
The rare Tommykaira ZZ electric sports car returns in 2026 as the Number Nine Works Sweep 9 restyling. With updated front design and safety compliance, this one-off demo car keeps original EV powertrain. No production planned.
Rare Tommykaira ZZ makes an unexpected return in 2026. According to Carscoops, designer Ryuhei Ishimaru and engineer Yuji Fujitsuka have created the Number Nine Works Sweep 9—a street-legal demo car based on the second-gen Tommykaira ZZ EV. Both previously worked at GLM, the company behind the electric version.
The project's primary goal is to update the sports car's front end with factory-quality work, while retaining the rear body and original livery. The Sweep 9 gets a new front bumper, narrow LED headlights, additional LEDs in the bumper, and a cleaner nose without air intakes. The car also meets Japanese safety standards.
No technical upgrades have been made. The underpinnings remain from the second-gen Tommykaira ZZ with an electric powertrain: two motors produce a combined 305 hp and 415 Nm. This ZZ differs from the gasoline original of the 1990s, which used a 2.0-liter Nissan engine.
There are no plans for series production. The creators don't intend to apply this restyling to other ZZ EVs, though owners of the rare models would likely be interested.
