Stellantis has announced a major recall in the US, affecting 419,035 Jeep vehicles. The issue stems from a software glitch that could cause side airbags to deploy with a delay during a crash.

The recall covers the Jeep Grand Cherokee (2022–2026) and Jeep Grand Cherokee L (2023–2025). According to NHTSA, the fault means these vehicles don't comply with US federal safety standards. For owners, this is far more than a minor electronic nuisance: in a side collision, even a split second can make a difference in passenger protection.

The fix will be a software update. Dealers will upload new software to the restraint control module free of charge. The airbags themselves won't be replaced, as the problem lies in the module's logic, not its hardware.

The scale of this recall is a major headache for Stellantis, involving hundreds of thousands of units from one of Jeep's core SUV lineups. For owners, the process is straightforward: check the VIN, wait for notification, and book a service appointment promptly. When it comes to airbags, it's unwise to wait for the error to trigger in a real-world crash.
