Tesla Robotaxi opens to everyone in Austin and the Bay Area

Tesla's Robotaxi is now open to all iPhone users, live in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. Driverless in Austin (except highway merges); cautious rollout.

Tesla has opened its Robotaxi service to everyone, though for now only iPhone owners can use it. The app is live in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. In Austin, the cars run without a driver, except on stretches that involve merging onto highways. Around the Bay, a person still occupies the driver’s seat.

The service has been operating since the summer of 2025, initially by invitation. Gradual expansion has helped the company collect more data for local regulators and assess how stable the system is. Earlier, Tesla enforced internal limits, including a mandatory onboard Safety Monitor. Taken together, the measured rollout comes across as careful and methodical—an approach that fits the level of scrutiny surrounding autonomous driving.
