Polestar 3 owners in California get V2H bidirectional home charging
Polestar rolls out V2H bidirectional charging for Polestar 3 in California with dcbel's Ara, cutting costs up to $1,300/year and powering homes up to 10 days.
Polestar has introduced the first commercial bidirectional charging system for Polestar 3 owners in California. The V2H setup not only charges the car but also sends energy back to the home, trimming electricity costs and providing backup during outages for up to 10 days. For owners, it turns the battery into a practical part of the household energy plan rather than a resource that sits idle.
Developed with dcbel and built on the Polestar 3’s 400-volt architecture, the solution includes the Ara home station. Operating on DC, Ara can help reduce charging costs by up to $1,300 per year. The project is supported by California Energy Commission incentives that cover a significant portion of equipment and installation expenses.
CEO Michael Lohscheller described the technology as a revolution for both the auto industry and home energy. Polestar also emphasizes that the vehicle can support the local grid and raise the share of renewable power, a direction that makes two-way charging meaningful beyond a single driveway.
Polestar is preparing to expand the program: in Germany and other countries, the Zaptec Go2 AC charger will arrive ready for bidirectional use after a software update. A software-driven path should make adoption feel more straightforward.
