BMW 220i Active Tourer Exclusive: A New Mild Hybrid Trim for Japan
BMW introduces the 220i Active Tourer Exclusive in Japan, featuring a 48-volt mild hybrid system for smoother driving and lower fuel consumption. Price starts at 5.43 million yen.
BMW has added a new trim to its Japanese 2 Series Active Tourer lineup: the 220i Active Tourer Exclusive. It comes with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and is already available at official dealerships, with initial deliveries expected after June.
Priced at 5.43 million yen (about $34,600 or 2.72 million rubles), this compact family BMW isn’t just an entry-level model. Instead of chasing power, it focuses on smoother everyday driving — with gentle starts, reduced fuel consumption in traffic, and a quieter start-stop system. According to Response, the 48-volt lithium-ion battery powers an electric motor integrated into the transmission, and energy is recovered during deceleration.
Under the hood is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine from BMW’s TwinPower Turbo family. It produces 156 hp and 240 Nm on its own, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With the hybrid assist, total output rises to 170 hp and 280 Nm. The electric motor also doubles as a starter, making engine restarts less noticeable for the driver.
This Active Tourer isn’t aimed at those looking for a sporty BMW. It’s for buyers who want a compact premium family car for city use. The hybrid system doesn’t turn it into an EV, but it smooths out many of the small annoyances of a conventional gasoline engine.
With this version, BMW is selling tranquility rather than power — and charging a premium price for it.
