Porsche Macan Production Ending: What to Know Before Buying Used
The Porsche Macan production ends in 2026. Before buying a used Macan, know common reliability issues like water pumps, transmission jerks, and infotainment glitches. Expert guide.
The gasoline-powered Porsche Macan is living its last months on the production line. Production is scheduled to end in summer 2026, and no direct ICE replacement is expected before 2028. That means interest in used Macans from 2021 to 2024 could rise sharply.
On paper, the model looks solid. Those model years are considered among the best for used buys. Owners surveyed by J.D. Power and Kelley Blue Book generally praise the Macan's quality and reliability. Consumer Reports even named the 2024 Macan the most reliable SUV in its class.
But real owners have identified a list of weak spots. For versions with the 2.9-liter biturbo V6, a major risk area is the water pump. If it fails, coolant can leak into the vacuum lines, which then affects the turbo wastegate control and reduces boost. For Porsche, that's no minor issue — the repair can quickly become expensive.
Brakes also draw complaints. Some 2021 Macan owners reported low-speed squeaking. On 2022 models, owners describe transmission jerks and shuddering, especially on lower gears and in reverse.
The rearview camera has been criticized too. Some owners call the image quality very poor, even the worst they've experienced. This isn't related to a separate Porsche recall on cameras in other models, but it's worth checking when buying a specific Macan.
Inside, infotainment glitches appear. One 2024 Macan owner reported the system freezing on startup within the first months. Other issues include cracks and peeling trim, especially on pillars and the console, plus rattles from the dashboard and doors.
The climate control system is another area to inspect. Complaints range from weak cooling to complete HVAC failure after low mileage. For cars with a sunroof, pay close attention to the drains — when clogged, water can leak into the cabin. Owners have even pursued a class-action lawsuit over this.
The Macan remains one of the most driver-friendly compact SUVs. But buying one used requires a thorough inspection, not an emotional decision. A good example delivers almost a sports sedan in an SUV body. A bad one quickly reminds you that even a used Porsche carries premium maintenance costs.
