The BMW Group plant in Landshut, Germany, has started pre-series production of a key control unit for BMW's hydrogen powertrain. Known as the “Energy Master”, it will eventually be used in the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen. At the same time, the plant is commissioning a second production line for the control unit used in Neue Klasse EVs (the BMW iX3 and BMW i3).

The Energy Master is the central control unit for the high-voltage system. In electric cars, it sits on the high-voltage battery. In the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, a modified version acts as the central control unit within the drivetrain and is mounted on BMW's hydrogen storage system.

This unit consolidates energy and data flows, manages the power supply for both the electric motor and the onboard electrical system, and ensures safe, intelligent system operation. In effect, it's the critical link between the fuel-cell system, the innovative high-voltage battery, and the electric drives.

Experience at the BMW Group plant in Landshut enables the combination of battery and hydrogen technologies in the powertrain domain. Close integration of electrical and electronic engineering with industrial series production makes the facility ideal for manufacturing components for both technologies. For the first time, the BMW Group is developing and producing the Energy Master entirely in-house.
