Mercedes is working on a compact G-Class, but it has already revised its original plan. The small G-Class was initially planned as an EV only. However, American dealers persuaded the company to also offer gasoline-powered versions.

Mercedes-AMG boss Michael Schiebe told Automotive News that US dealers were straightforward: the market wants an ICE variant. Mercedes agreed that an ICE model should have sufficient power and will definitely join the lineup.

The shift isn't just about dealer input. EV adoption is uneven—some markets have adequate charging infrastructure for premium electric vehicles, while others still suffer from range anxiety and concerns about long-distance travel. A gasoline Baby G removes that barrier and makes the model more palatable for markets such as the US.

Mercedes describes the compact G-Class as an entirely new model. That suggests it won't simply be a downsized version of the current G-Class or a rebadged CLA. The SUV is expected to keep a ladder frame, genuine off-road chops, and a spare wheel on the tailgate.

Rumor has it the little G-Class will measure around 4.4 meters in length. So it's not a toy city SUV but a more compact and affordable alternative to the full-size G. Sales are anticipated in 2027, though it's still unclear if the gasoline and electric versions will launch at the same time.

Mercedes has taken a pragmatic approach. An electric Baby G is great for brand image, but the gas-powered model might end up being the volume seller. Especially in markets where buyers want the iconic G-Class look and feel but don't want to schedule their lives around charging stops.
