Volvo and Google are developing a system that does more than just display camera feeds—it will actually understand the vehicle’s surroundings. The first demonstration of Google Gemini integrated with the Volvo EX60’s cameras is scheduled for the Google I/O conference on May 19–20.

The concept is straightforward: with the driver’s permission, Gemini accesses the camera feed and analyzes the environment from the car’s perspective. For instance, a driver might ask if they can park in a certain spot, and the AI would attempt to read signs, time restrictions, permits, charging rules, and other conditions.

This could prove more useful than yet another oversized screen. Parking signs are often cluttered with fine print, clauses, and exceptions—especially in cities. If the car can quickly clarify whether parking is allowed in a specific location, it could save time, reduce stress, and potentially avoid fines.

Volvo will also be among the first to adopt Google Maps’ Immersive Navigation, which offers a 3D view with detailed buildings, tunnels, overpasses, and complex interchanges. Voice guidance will sound more natural—instead of a terse instruction like “turn in 200 meters,” the system might say something like “go through this traffic light and turn left after the library.”

Volvo Cars’ head of global software development, Alvin Bakkenes, said the EX60 provides an ideal platform for exploring the future of context-aware driving experiences. Google added that Gemini would make trips more useful by helping drivers better understand their surroundings.

The Volvo EX60, EX90, and ES90 will be the first models to receive Immersive Navigation. As for the camera-equipped Gemini, it feels like a glimpse into the near future: the car goes beyond simply following a route and begins explaining the road in human language.
