Jaguar has settled on a name for its new electric flagship. The production sedan will be called Type 01—closely mirroring the Type 00 concept but with a clear nod to being the first model of the brand's new era.

According to the company, the name is straightforward: “0” points to the electric powertrain and zero emissions, while “1” stands for the first serial production car after Jaguar's reboot. The intention is for it to stand alongside icons like the D-Type, E-Type, and F-Type, though Type 01 sounds significantly colder and more digital in spirit.

The real question isn't the name but whether buyers will buy into the new Jaguar. Based on spy shots, the production car retains much of the 2024 concept's design but adds four doors. The styling will certainly be eye-catching—if controversial. Jaguar is consciously moving away from its traditional elegance toward a sharper, almost provocative look.

The technical specs are serious. The Type 01 rides on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture. The powertrain features one front-mounted electric motor and two at the rear, delivering over 1,000 horsepower and approximately 1,300 Nm of torque. The battery is expected to be around 120 kWh.

After the I-Pace, Jaguar can't afford a battery misstep. The brand's first electric crossover won plenty of awards but later became known for recalls tied to problematic LG batteries. For the Type 01, repeating that scenario would be far more damaging than any debate over its looks.

The official debut is set for September, with sales to follow later. Jaguar clearly aims to compete in the realm of expensive electric GTs and Bentley-level luxury, but power alone won't cut it. At that price point, customers need more than 1,000 hp—they need confidence that the new Jaguar can be desirable on its own merits, not just on the strength of a legacy badge.
