Lotus Focus 2030 Strategy Blends ICE, Hybrids, and Supercar Ambitions
Lotus details Focus 2030 strategy: Emira refresh with weight reduction, future Esprit supercar with V8 hybrid, and plug-in hybrids for Eletre and Emeya. Aiming to adapt luxury car market.
Lotus has unveiled its new Focus 2030 strategy. According to Auto Express, the plan is designed to help the brand adapt to the shifting luxury car market. The core idea isn't to abandon electric vehicles but to make greater use of internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids.
The first result will be an updated Lotus Emira, expected to be revealed in the coming weeks. This is a crucial model for the company: the Emira remains the only Lotus built at the Hethel plant in Norfolk. After recent workforce reductions at the facility, the sports car's refresh is meant to secure its medium-term future.
Technical details are still scarce. Lotus says the new Emira will be the most powerful and lightest version of the model. It's unclear whether it will retain a four-cylinder engine or the V6. One source suggests not to expect a significant power boost, so the main improvements likely come from weight reduction and greater use of lightweight composites.
Another part of the plan is the future Type 135 supercar. The production version is expected to be called the Lotus Esprit and arrive in 2028. It is said to feature a V8 along with hybrid technology. This appears to be an attempt to bring Lotus back into the emotional supercar segment, but with a modern powertrain.
For four-door models, Lotus is shifting focus toward plug-in hybrids. In Europe, the Lotus Eletre X with 951 hp should debut. Later, the Emeya sedan will also get a hybrid system.
For the new X Hybrid system, Lotus is using a 1.5-liter gasoline engine from the joint Horse Powertrains project, which involves Geely and Renault. It will work together with two electric motors and a 900-volt architecture. China remains the key growth market for Lotus, where demand for powerful plug-in hybrids is still strong.
