Peugeot GTi Returns: Electric E-208 in 2026, 308 Considered
Peugeot revives GTi badge with electric E-208 GTi in 2026, and considers a 308 hot hatch. Learn about the challenges and future plans for these sporty EVs.
Peugeot is getting ready to revive the GTi badge on production cars. The first model to carry it will be the electric E-208 GTi, expected later in 2026. But according to Auto Express, the French brand is already considering expanding beyond just one car.
Peugeot CEO Alain Fave said the brand is exploring ways to apply the GTi name where it truly belongs, citing the Peugeot 308 as an example. That doesn't mean a production version is confirmed—the company is studying whether such a car can be technically and commercially viable.
The challenge isn't simply slapping on a GTi badge; it's maintaining the name's integrity. Fave noted that a true GTi must have engaging handling and capable hardware without being prohibitively expensive. So far, Peugeot hasn't found the sweet spot for the 308 in terms of powertrain, tuning, and price.
Theoretically, a future E-308 GTi could borrow the 280-hp electric motor from the E-208 GTi. That output actually exceeds the old gasoline-powered 308 GTi. However, the 208 and 308 ride on different platforms and use different batteries, so a straightforward parts swap isn't possible.
The previous-generation Peugeot 308 GTi was discontinued in 2021. Since then, the brand hasn't offered a true hot hatch version of the 308, and the Peugeot Sport Engineered badge never materialized for this model. Now, the company is assessing whether demand for an electric hot hatch is strong enough to justify the investment.
