Toyota Corolla Celebrates 60 Years with New Active Sport Special Editions

Toyota marks the Corolla's 60th anniversary with updated Active Sport trims for Japan. New styling, hybrid powertrain, and special badges. Learn more about the Corolla Active Sport and Touring Active Sport.

Toyota is celebrating the Corolla's 60th anniversary not with a museum plaque, but with new versions for the Japanese market. To mark the occasion, the company has updated the Corolla Active Sport and Corolla Touring Active Sport, and similar trims will later appear on the Corolla Sport and Corolla Cross.

The key figure here is more than 57 million Corollas sold worldwide since 1966. The model has long ceased to be just one car; it's a global lineup, sold in over 150 countries and regions, produced at 12 plants in 11 countries, plus three factories in Japan.

The anniversary Active Sport models get a 60th-anniversary logo on the front fenders and laser engraving on the synthetic-leather-wrapped instrument panel. For front-wheel-drive versions, a specially tuned suspension is claimed, and equipment includes 17-inch black wheels with branded center caps.

The Corolla Active Sport has a more urban style: a special front bumper, body-colored moldings, and front sports seats in a gray-black scheme. The Corolla Touring Active Sport looks a bit more street-SUV-ish: black elements, dark gray seats, and a special Neutral Black x Ash paint.

Mechanically, no surprises: the anniversary versions use a 1.8-liter hybrid system based on the 2ZR-FXE engine. The Corolla Active Sport starts at 3,231,800 yen, the Touring Active Sport at 3,282,400 yen. All-wheel-drive E-Four versions are also available, costing more.

Regular Corolla and Corolla Touring also get minor updates: new colors Neutral Black and Emotional Red II, and the X trim now comes standard with Smart Entry and a navigation preparation package.

Toyota also introduced a new Corolla for driving schools. It will be offered as a 1.8-liter hybrid with e-CVT or a 1.5-liter Dynamic Force petrol with a six-speed manual. For the Corolla, this is almost symbolic: the car that millions of people learned to drive on is now entering the hybrid era without losing its role as an everyday, understandable vehicle.
