Tesla Model Y L Prototype at Giga Texas Sparks US Launch Talk

A covered prototype at Giga Texas hints at a larger Model Y L for the US. Could this family crossover fill the gap between Model Y and Cybertruck? Read more.

Tesla is fueling speculation again about an expansion of the Model Y family. Automotive media report that a covered prototype was spotted at the Giga Texas factory, parked next to a standard Model Y and a Cybertruck. The photo was taken by factory watcher and drone operator Joe Tegtmeyer.

Based on its silhouette, the vehicle resembles a Model Y, but the rear proportions are noticeably different. Observers note a longer rear door, an altered window line, and a shape reminiscent of the Chinese Model Y L. That version, already on sale in China, features larger dimensions, a more spacious interior, and a family-oriented layout. According to industry publications, the Chinese Model Y L measures about 4.98 meters in length with a wheelbase of around 3.04 meters.

The prototype's sighting is especially interesting given the current state of Tesla's lineup in the US. The company is winding down production of the Model S and Model X — Elon Musk has confirmed that production of these models is ending, and buyers are largely limited to existing inventory. This leaves a clear gap between the Model Y and the Cybertruck for a larger family electric crossover.

However, the launch of the Model Y L in the US has not been confirmed. Musk has previously stated that production of such a version in North America might not begin until late 2026, and he also indicated that the model might never come to this market. Therefore, this prototype should not be taken as proof of an imminent debut. If the Model Y L does make it to America, Tesla may focus on a more practical version of its best-selling electric crossover rather than the separate, expensive Model X.
