Volkswagen Jetta X: A New Electric Crossover for the Chinese Market
Volkswagen launches the Jetta X electric crossover for China. With a digital cabin and off-road styling, it's part of a new China-first strategy to rival BYD.
Volkswagen is making a dramatic pivot in China with the unveiling of its new electric crossover, the Jetta X. The model is central to a strategy aimed at reclaiming ground the brand has lost in recent years as domestic competitors have surged.
Where the German giant once set the trends, it now finds itself playing catch-up. Rivals like BYD and Geely have rapidly seized the lead, prompting Volkswagen to double down on affordability and deep localization.
The Jetta X was developed under a China-for-China philosophy, with its design, technology, and time-to-market all tailored to appeal to the mass market. Expected to carry a price of around €12,000 to €13,000, the crossover features a modern digital cabin dominated by large displays and almost no physical buttons—a clear nod to the preferences of younger buyers.
On the outside, the model adopts a tougher, more angular look that leans toward off-road aesthetics rather than the typical city-SUV silhouette. This styling shift is another sign of the brand’s changing philosophy in the region. The project is being executed through a new entity, FAW-Volkswagen Jetta, which was set up in 2026 specifically to accelerate development and decision-making.
That structure is expected to help Volkswagen move more nimbly amid fierce competition. The Jetta X is just the first move; by 2028, the company plans to introduce a string of additional models, including hybrids and long-range versions.
For the first time in ages, Volkswagen is adapting to the rhythm of the Chinese market rather than dictating the tune. If the Jetta X hits the mark, it could reshape the brand’s entire Asian strategy.
