GWM Plans Multi-Powertrain Future, Not Fully Electric, Says CEO

GWM follows Toyota's multi-powertrain playbook, offering gasoline, diesel, hybrid, PHEV, and EVs. The brand rules out going all-electric, citing varied market needs in regions like Russia and Brazil.

GWM has no intention of putting all its eggs in the electric-vehicle basket and draws a parallel between its own strategy and Toyota’s. Speaking to Australian media, company chief Jack Wey explained that the brand is focusing on a variety of powertrain options rather than a single type of technology.

He noted that different regions require different solutions. He cited Russia, where electric vehicles are not suitable for all drivers due to the cold climate, in the company’s view. Brazil, meanwhile, faces the hurdle of an underdeveloped charging infrastructure.

Today, GWM offers gasoline, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models. The company is also investing in hydrogen technology and working on diesel hybrids and diesel PHEVs. At the same time, it is keeping its distance from extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), in which the internal combustion engine acts only as a generator.

In Australia, the brand already sells various powertrain types and expects to hit 60,000 sales this year. Its long‑term goal is to break into the country’s top five brands, with at least 75,000 units annually. These statements make it clear that GWM has no plans to go fully electric; it will continue to offer choices tailored to markets with different operating conditions.
