AMG trims lineup under new EU noise limits, bets on digital V8 sound
EU UN R51.03 Phase 3 forces AMG to drop C43, GLC43 and GLA35 in 2026, while V8s stay. Brand pivots to hybrids and EVs with signature synthetic V8-style sound.
Mercedes-AMG is coming under pressure from new European rules: from July 2026, UN‑R51.03 Phase 3 tightens the permissible level of external noise. According to a leaked internal memo, several AMG models have already been deemed non-compliant.
The cuts will hit the four‑cylinder AMG C43 4Matic, GLC43 4Matic, and GLA35 — their production ends in February 2026. The C63 SE Performance and GLC63 SE Performance will last a little longer, but their runs will also cease in May. The only compact survivor is the GLA45 S, which remains on sale for now.
Interestingly, the V8 lineup is largely untouched: it does not appear in the leak, which suggests AMG’s traditional flagships stay in the picture. Even so, the brand is preparing its biggest range overhaul yet, with a wave of hybrids and full EVs on the AMG.EA platform. The electric models are set to feature a signature V8‑style sound — synthetic, yet designed to stir emotion.
In parallel, an updated SL63 has been spotted in testing, a reminder that the era of classic AMGs is not over. For the loud four‑cylinder versions, though, the sun is setting — and that reads as the first serious blow to the AMG character coming from regulators. The real test will be whether the synthesized note can carry the drama drivers expect.
Everything points to European noise limits becoming as pivotal for carmakers as emissions rules. AMG will have to find fresh ways to keep the emotional spark alive — and the bet, it seems, is on sound, only now delivered digitally.
