Mazda Trademarks CX-40 Name, Hinting at New Crossover
Mazda has filed a trademark for the CX-40 name. The new model could slot between the CX-30 and CX-5, as the brand expands its crossover lineup with smaller and larger offerings.
Mazda has filed a trademark application for the name CX-40, signaling a possible expansion of its crossover lineup. The filing was submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on February 27, 2026.
If launched, this new model would slot between the CX-30 and the larger CX-5 or CX-50. Mazda already offers various crossovers, from compact to full-size, including the CX-60, CX-70, and CX-90, along with region-specific models.
The “40” badge isn't new for the brand. Mazda previously sold the CX-4 from 2016 to 2025, which filled the gap between the CX-3 and CX-5 but was exclusive to the Chinese market.
Alongside the CX-40, the trademark database also includes names like CX-10 and CX-20, hinting at plans for smaller models. Mazda recently unveiled the Vision X Compact concept, which could serve as the foundation for a future production crossover.
Meanwhile, the company is developing the next-generation CX-30, expected to debut in the coming years. This expanding lineup underscores Mazda's commitment to the new-car segment, which continues to drive the bulk of market demand.
