New BMW iX5 electric crossover aims for 900+ km range

BMW is developing the iX5 electric crossover with up to 1000 km WLTP range, 147.8 kWh battery, and 576 hp dual-motor AWD. Targeting long-distance travel with fewer stops.

BMW is preparing a new electric crossover, the iX5, which could become one of the longest-range EVs in its class. Early information points to a 147.8 kWh battery pack and a WLTP range of up to 900–1000 km, putting it at the top of the segment.

The iX5 fills the gap between mid-size electric cars and flagship SUVs, directly competing with the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric. It rides on the Neue Klasse platform and uses new 46120 cylindrical cells designed for larger vehicles.

Technically, the crossover will feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of around 576 hp (an electric motor producing 250 hp at the front and a 326 hp unit at the rear). The battery operates at 705 volts, enabling ultra-fast charging.

Despite the larger battery capacity, BMW is focusing on efficiency. Thanks to the new architecture and optimized aerodynamics, even the sizable iX5 should maintain a high level of energy efficiency.

The model is expected to arrive within the next year or two, replacing the current iX. Given its specs, the iX5 could set a new benchmark for premium electric SUVs, especially for long-distance travel with fewer charging stops.
