Nissan Patents a New Tailgate Concept for More Flexible Cargo Access

Nissan's new patent introduces a tailgate with a movable section to simplify loading long items in pickups, enhancing practicality without complex transformations.

Nissan has introduced a new engineering concept for pickups aimed at improving the practicality of the cargo bed. A patent published in April 2026 describes a tailgate with an additional movable section that makes transporting long items more convenient and secure.

Unlike traditional designs where the tailgate opens as a single piece, the new setup features a central panel integrated into the main tailgate. This section can move independently using guides, rollers, or even an electric actuator. As a result, drivers get multiple use scenarios: they can open the entire tailgate or just part of it.

Why does this matter to owners? This approach is especially useful when carrying long items like pipes, boards, or construction materials. Partial opening lets you secure the load without leaving the entire bed exposed, reducing the risk of shifting or losing other items while driving.

Importantly, Nissan focuses on functionality rather than complex transformation. Unlike systems such as GM's MultiPro, where the tailgate serves multiple roles, the Japanese concept addresses a specific task: improving access and loading flexibility.

For now, this is just a patent, and there is no guarantee the technology will make it to production models. Given the practical value of the solution, however, it seems likely to appear on future versions of the Nissan Frontier or other pickups.
