Leapmotor D99: A Bold New Electric MPV with 800 km Range for Families
Discover the Leapmotor D99, a full-size electric MPV with 1000-volt platform, 800 km range, CATL 115 kWh battery, and family-friendly luxury. Debut at Beijing Auto Show.
At the Beijing Auto Show, 32CARS journalists got a firsthand look at the Leapmotor D99, a new large MPV that the brand positions as a family-oriented, tech-forward flagship model. In photos, the car appears in an unusual Beijing Zoo-themed version with a giant panda on the roof, but behind the playful exterior lies serious hardware: the LEAP 4.0 architecture, a 2+2+3 seven-seat layout, a 1000-volt electric platform, and a claimed range of up to 800 km.
Leapmotor showcased the D99 at the Beijing Auto Show as one of the standout vehicles in its new D-series. Photos reveal that this is no compact family van but a full-size MPV with a near-vertical rear, a short front overhang, a high roofline, and a cabin pushed as far forward as possible. The dimensions confirm the format: length is 5280 mm, width is 1995 mm, height is either 1900 mm or 1880 mm depending on the version, and wheelbase reaches 3110 mm.
The D99 adopts Leapmotor's new design language, featuring pixel DLP headlights, an active grille, and a slim light bar up front, along with an interactive ISD panel at the rear that allows customizable display scenarios. The car in the photos is further adorned with eye-catching exhibition graphics featuring a panda and green motifs, giving it a show-car appearance, though the model is billed as a production vehicle for the Chinese market.
Underpinning the Leapmotor D99 is the new LEAP 4.0 architecture, which integrates power electronics, an intelligent cabin, and advanced driver-assistance systems. The car is equipped with two Qualcomm 8797 chips, a centralized domain controller, and a VLA-based driver assistance system. It also includes AEB and AES—active collision avoidance and emergency maneuvering functions.
The all-electric version rides on a 1000-volt platform and uses a CATL battery pack with 115 kWh capacity. Its claimed range falls between 720 and 800 km. Additionally, an extended-range version is available, featuring an 800-volt architecture, a 1.5-liter turbo engine acting as a generator, and an 80.3 kWh battery, delivering an electric-only range of about 500 km. All D99 models come standard with a two-chamber closed air suspension and CDC adaptive dampers, which should provide a smoother ride compared to conventional minivans.
The D99's main selling point is not just range but comfort. The seven-seat 2+2+3 layout targets both family trips and business shuttles. Second-row passengers get zero-gravity seats with four-way leg support and full recline capability. Other features include an oxygen cabin, a large fold-down screen, a built-in refrigerator, and a 21.4-inch overhead display for rear passengers.
In terms of positioning, the Leapmotor D99 will compete with models like the Li Auto Mega, Zeekr 009, Denza D9, and XPeng X9. Leapmotor traditionally undercuts premium rivals on price while keeping the equipment list generous. For the Chinese market, this is a significant release: the large electric MPV segment is growing quickly, and buyers are increasingly gravitating toward spacious vehicles with high levels of digital comfort rather than conventional sedans or crossovers.
The Leapmotor D99 stands out by turning a family minivan into a tech flagship. The panda on the roof may draw attention at the auto show, but the real value lies in the 1000-volt platform, the 115 kWh CATL battery, the air suspension, and a cabin where the second row feels nearly business-class. This sends a clear signal to the market: Chinese cars are now competing not just on price but also on a level of technology that, until recently, was reserved for expensive premium models.
